Bridal Outfit Checklist: How Many Months Before the Wedding to Order

Almost every bride who visits our Sector 14 studio asks the same question first: "Am I too early, or am I already late?"

After 20+ years of designing and fitting bridal outfits, I can tell you that timing matters as much as the design. An outfit ordered with enough time gets proper fittings, careful embroidery and calm, stress-free final touches. An outfit rushed in the last few weeks leaves little room to fix anything.

The Short Answer

For a custom bridal lehenga, we recommend ordering 2-3 month before the wedding. If the wedding is closer, a custom outfit can still be possible, but the design choices and embroidery detail may be limited.

Peak wedding months (roughly November to February) fill up early, so book even sooner if your date falls in that window.

Step-by-Step Bridal Outfit Checklist

1. Decide your look and budget (8 to 6 months before)

Start with how you want to feel on the day: classic and traditional, soft and romantic, or modern and minimal. Fix an overall budget for the outfit, jewellery and accessories so there are no surprises later. Bring reference pictures, but stay open to the designer's suggestions on what suits your body and the venue.

2. Choose colour and fabric

Red is classic, but pastels, ivory, rose, wine and gold are increasingly popular. Think about your skin tone, the time of day and the season. Heavy velvet suits winter weddings, while lighter net and organza are easier in warm weather.

3. Finalise design details (5 to 4 months before)

Confirm the embroidery style, blouse neckline and back design, dupatta style and any customisation such as a name or a motif that matters to your family.

4. Plan outfits for every function (3 months before)

Most brides need several looks, so plan them together so colours, jewellery and styling don't repeat or clash.

  • Mehendi and haldi: light, comfortable outfits in bright or pastel colours
  • Sangeet and cocktail: lighter lehengas, gowns or sarees you can dance in
  • Wedding day: the main bridal lehenga
  • Reception: a saree, gown or lehenga with a different feel from the wedding outfit

5. Fittings (2 and 1 months before)

Attend every fitting wearing the same kind of undergarments and footwear you plan to wear on the day. Even small differences in heel height or shapewear change how the outfit sits. Mention anything that feels tight, heavy or uncomfortable straight away.

6. Final touches (last 2 weeks)

Collect the outfit, check every hook, zip and drawstring, and rehearse sitting, walking and dancing in it. Keep a small emergency kit with safety pins, a needle and thread and a spare hook.

Bridal Outfit Accessories Checklist

  1. Blouse and padding or lining sized for comfort
  2. Dupatta with a can-can or soft net edge, so it sits well
  3. Matching jewellery tried on with the outfit
  4. Comfortable footwear (and a backup pair)
  5. Undergarments and shapewear that suit the neckline and back
  6. Hair and makeup trial done with the real outfit
  7. Dupatta pins, safety pins and a spare hook

Common Mistakes Brides Make

  • Ordering too late: leaves no room for fittings or fixes.
  • Changing the design after the order: late changes can delay embroidery or affect the fit.
  • Skipping the footwear test: the hemline depends on heel height.
  • Planning only the wedding outfit: other functions need time too.
  • Choosing only by trend: pick a design you'll still love in photographs years later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many months before the wedding should I order my bridal lehenga?

For a custom bridal lehenga, plan for about 6 to 8 months. Ready-to-wear or altered outfits usually need less time. Book earlier for peak wedding months.

Can I order a bridal outfit in 2 months?

It may be possible, depending on the design and embroidery. Visit the studio early to check what can be done in your timeframe.

How many fittings will I need?

Most brides need at least two fittings: one around two months before and one around a month before. Complex outfits may need more.

Should I buy jewellery before or after the outfit?

After you've finalised the outfit, or at least once the design is fixed, so the neckline, colour and embroidery match your jewellery.

Can I make outfits for my family's functions at the same time?

Yes, and it helps the colours and styling work together. Plan the outfits for each function when you place your bridal order.
